When x-rays enter a patient, they are differentially transmitted by tissue of differing thickness and composition.
When they exit the patient, they are an invisible map of internal anatomy. Image receptors tranform the x-ray map into a visible picture or image.
The method by which they do depends on the imaging modality. How it is done is largely beyond the scope of this presentation, but there is detailed information on image acquisition elsewhere in this website for those who are interested.
