X-rays interact with matter several different ways. The following terms are used to describe x-rays before, during and after these interactions;
- Primary Beam X-rays:The useful x-ray beam emitted to intercept patient anatomy to form an image.
- Scatter: X-rays that have been redirected due to interaction with the patient's tissue.
- Backscatter: Primary beam x-rays that are deflected back towards the x-ray tube.
- Leakage: X-rays that leak out of the tube housing during exposure.
- Transmitted x-rays: X-rays that travel through the patient anatomy unchanged in energy and direction.
