The units of Exposure and Absorbed Dose are strongly related. Because they describe the transfer of energy due to the action of ionizing radiation, they are conceptually easier to understand than the quantity of Equivalent or Effective Dose.
Equivalent or Effective Dose is a more abstract concept. It is derived from scientific data on how Absorbed dose affects tissue, and how that affect translates as detriment to the tissue or individual as a whole. The fact that the definition of Equivalent or Effective Dose varies in the literature makes it even more difficult to grasp.
