ALARA
In the course of our lives, we use agents and materials that pose both benefits and risks to our well being.

A few hours in the sun is pleasant and provides our bodies with essential vitamin D, but too long in the sun without protection can cause skin burning, pre-mature skin aging and increases our risk for skin cancer.

When risk and benefit co-exist, we manage the risk by keeping exposure to the agent or material to As Low As Reasonably Achievable. This is known as the ALARA principle.
