Information
SMPTE and other patterns test ones ability to perceive resolution and contrast. Users tend to memorize static patterns and this can lead to inaccurate assessments of display quality. The above grayscales are generated with random alphanumeric characters on each step each time the page is loaded - preventing memorization. These characters are seperated from their background by either 4 or 8 grayscale steps. By typing the characters that are seen into the fields below each step, the ability to see information can be scored without fear of false perception by the user. Note that this should be considered an educational tool and not a precision test of the state of your monitor, but if you score poorly on the 8 step grayscale, assessment using AAPM procedures is recommended.
